Our Mission:
Heartland View is an online travel and leisure publication presented from an entertaining, informative and visually-pleasing perspective.
We design for the voice of the Midwest with travel, review and feature writing. We target our content to meet the needs and appeal to young adults.
We offer an educational experience for our readers and provide a personal connection to the people, places and events of the Midwest.
We capture the spirit and style of the Midwest.
About the Publication:
Heartland View is Northwest Missouri State University's first electronic magazine, or 'e-zine.' The publication is encompasses Midwest travel and leisure in the states of Missouri, Nebraska, Iowa and Kansas.
Heartland View is produced entirely by students at Northwest, with the guidance of our content adviser, Laura Widmer.
As a staff, we strive to capture the "spirit and style of the Midwest" by covering unique places, people and events in the Heartland.
Heartland View History:
Heartland View started in print in 1992 as a four-color magazine and the dream of Laura Widmer, mass communications assistant professor and student publication adviser.
Seeking the help of past editors of Tower Yearbook and The Northwest Missourian, Widmer's dream came true in 1992 when Heartland View hit the newsstands.
Through several seasons, Northwest students traveled thousands of miles across the Heartland. However, in 1999, the University cut the publications funding and Heartland could no longer afford to be printed. The final print edition of Heartland View was mailed to subscribers in the summer of 1999.
Despite the lack of funding, Widmer wouldn't let the publication die. In the fall of 2001, student publications purchased a domain name and on Nov. 15, 2001, the winter issue of heartlandview.com went world-wide.
With that bit of history of one devoted adviser and countless Northwest students, we welcome you to the Heartland View family. You are now a part of history.
